We are getting ready to move again. After more than a week of getting situated at Etna, soldiers in Force Package 1 are joining the others at Deadwood. Most of the crews now are have shifted to chipping and patrolling and there is talk in the air of “what’s next”. Like Gypsies, we have already traveled more than 700 miles on our journey to support the fires. When we were called up, we had no idea it would require the amount of movement, mountains, effort and…change. I am reminded of the wisdom of king David (Proverbs 16:9),
9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
Change is hard…for everyone. Especially when we don’t have any say over it. Even planned change, that are blessings (like a promotion, career move, or a new kid) can be stressful. Its even harder when we don’t plan for it. King David talks about this. No matter what we plan, things can change. Whether its op orders, travel or emergencies, all of our plans can change. David asks us to remember that. When our plans changes in front of us, God will help us grow to where we need to be. I find that helpful. Even if you don’t believe in God, you have probably felt the sense that sometimes changed plans can help you on your path. I know for me, most of the best things that happened in my life have been unplanned. As our Etna camp moves into Deadwood tomorrow, look for opportunities to grow yourself. Maybe there are relationships, skills, experiences or just new surroundings that can inspire you. After all, nothing changes if nothing changes. What changes do you need to make to help you take the next steps in your life?
