Most of the crews now are starting to get the hang of this (some even want to do it full time). Hiking up hills, pulling in hose, and mopping up hot spots. That’s how you put out fires. As the Captain said yesterday, “Firefighters put out fires.” The aircraft, dozers, fire trucks and retardant slow down a fire, but there are no shortcuts for doing the work. As we have learned the last few days, its takes carefully walking the line and putting out every burning root. Only crews mopping the ground put out fires. There are no shortcuts! The ancient king Solomon once said (Proverbs 10:4-5),
Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
Its amazing how much we want our lives to be easy. How we avoid pain. I am still amazed at the part of me that wants something for nothing. Here, Solomon cautions against it. The harvest doesn’t get gathered and fires don’t get put out without sweat and diligent hands. If you want to be wise and get the job done, there is no substitute for working and putting out fires. What areas of your life need work? Are your relationships, your health, your spiritual life on fire? There is only one way to put it out- work! Fires won’t put themselves out. Their are no shortcuts to a healthy emotional, physical and spiritual life. Take some time today and put out the fires that you have been delaying. Stay safe!
